Troocoo is proud to partner with a leading transport infrastructure organisation to recruit an experienced Rail Safety Director for a major rail infrastructure project in South East Queensland.
As the Rail Safety Director, you will lead the strategic direction and delivery of all safety-related functions across the program. You will be responsible for embedding a proactive safety culture, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, and providing expert leadership in health, safety, and psychosocial wellbeing. This pivotal role will see you work closely with project partners, regulators, and contractors to achieve world-class safety outcomes.

This pivotal role will see you work closely with project partners, regulators, and contractors to achieve world-class safety outcomes.
Key Accountabilities
In this senior leadership position, you will:
- Lead Safety Governance: Act as the principal safety lead for the project, building strong relationships with Queensland Rail, ONRSR, WHSQ, emergency services, and major contractors to ensure compliance with all safety legislation and frameworks.
- Provide Strategic Direction: Deliver expert advice to project leadership on WHS and psychosocial safety obligations, ensuring a consistent and effective approach to safety across all delivery packages.
- Manage Risk, Assurance and Performance: Oversee the safety risk register, coordinate third-party audits and inspections, analyse incidents, and implement mitigation strategies to enhance safety performance.
- Develop Systems and Standards: Design, implement, and monitor safety assurance systems, procedures, and WHS documentation, including Safety Management Plans and audit frameworks.
- Foster Collaboration and Capability: Partner with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders to share learnings, conduct Toolbox Talks, and build a strong, compliant safety culture across the project.
Role Requirements – Skills and Capabilities
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
Qualifications:
- Tertiary qualifications in business, engineering, safety, or a related field.
- Current qualifications to access and inspect works on a Queensland Rail corridor (e.g. Safely Access the Rail Corridor – SARC).
- Lead Auditor qualification.
- Current Queensland Construction White Card.
- Current Open driver’s licence.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a criminal history clearance (due to access to sensitive data).
- Proven leadership experience within large-scale infrastructure or transport construction programs, ideally within the rail sector.
- Demonstrated ability to provide assurance and oversight of contractor performance in complex, high-risk environments.
- In-depth knowledge of the Rail Safety National Law and WHS legislation, along with best practice safety management principles.
- Extensive experience conducting inspections, coordinating third-party audits, and managing WHS non-conformances on rail infrastructure projects.
- Proven expertise in incident investigation and implementation of corrective actions.
- Strong ability to prepare detailed reports, briefings, and correspondence for senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build strong, productive relationships across government, industry, and community stakeholders.
- Collaborative leadership style with a track record of mentoring and developing multidisciplinary teams.
- Strategic and analytical mindset with the ability to drive data-informed safety improvements.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex safety concepts for diverse audiences.
- High-level proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and relevant safety management systems.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply changing safety legislation, regulations, and industry standards.
