Payroll and Project Manager

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Payroll and Project Manager to lead and continuously improve the payroll function for our organisation’s workforce of approximately 1,600 employees.
This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the accurate, compliant, and timely end-to-end processing of payroll and superannuation, while contributing to broader People and Culture initiatives.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, People and Culture, you will lead a small payroll team and act as a subject matter expert across payroll operations, system enhancements, and legislative compliance. You will work closely with Employee Relations and senior stakeholders to resolve complex payroll matters and support organisational projects.
Working with Workday HCM and Aurion for Payroll.   The role will be focused mainly on  current weekly pay processing, with increasing involvement in a new HR platform.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach, and develop the Payroll Team, promoting operational excellence and a strong employee experience
  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and legislative compliance
  • Provide expert advice on payroll, remuneration, awards, agreements, and superannuation
  • Lead payroll-related system upgrades, enhancements, and testing activities
  • Investigate and resolve complex payroll issues in partnership with People and Culture and Employee Relations
  • Maintain and improve payroll procedures, controls, and reporting
  • Ensure compliance with changing industrial and legislative requirements
  • Lead payroll audit responses (Queensland Audit Office and Internal Audit)
  • Contribute to projects and continuous improvement initiatives across People and Culture
About You
You are a highly organised payroll professional with strong leadership capability and a passion for continuous improvement.
Essential Requirements
  • Extensive experience in a medium to large, complex payroll environment
  • Expert knowledge of payroll legislation, awards, agreements, and superannuation
  • Strong experience with HR/Payroll Information Systems and Time & Attendance systems
  • Proven ability to lead teams and deliver high-quality, results-focused services
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet weekly payroll deadlines
Desirable
  • Relevant qualifications in Payroll Management or Payroll Administration
  • Experience in a local government environment
  • System implementation or major payroll system upgrade experience
