Job description
A Queensland Government department is undertaking a major technical refresh of its Public Safety Network (PSN), transitioning from DMVPN to an SR-MPLS architecture as part of a Cisco router hardware end-of-life program.
An experienced Principal Network Specialist is required to join a dedicated project team, working closely with the Project Manager to configure, commission and transition new router hardware within a complex, large-scale network environment.
This is a long-term contract opportunity through to June 2026, with extension options, offering a hybrid working environment based in the Brisbane CBD.

Key Responsibilities
- Build and configure Cisco routers in line with SR-MPLS network specifications
- Commission routers and network monitoring hardware remotely in collaboration with installers
- Develop and maintain change documentation for approval by client agencies
- Update inventory and configuration records during build, commissioning and decommissioning phases
- Perform data integrity checks across network systems
- Operate within the PSN Management Centre (PSNMC) technical framework
- Demonstrated, hands-on experience with SR-MPLS networks
- Strong experience configuring and supporting Cisco router platforms
- In-depth knowledge of MPLS VPN technologies including VRFs, VPLS, EVPN, VXLAN and VRF-lite
- Detailed understanding of Layer 3 routing protocols (MP-BGP, OSPF) across large-scale IPv4 and IPv6 environments
- Strong understanding of end-to-end QoS across MPLS, Layer 2 and Layer 3 environments
- Experience with wireless and radio networks, including 4/5G LTE design and deployment
- Experience with authentication and identity technologies (TACACS, RADIUS, AD, SAML/SSO, OAuth)
- Strong knowledge of VPN and encryption technologies (IPSec, DMVPN, SSL VPN, MACsec, Always On VPN)
- Proven ability to analyse packet captures and logs using tools such as Wireshark, tcpdump, NetScout and Splunk
- Experience working with carrier core, aggregation and access interconnects (PNI, NNI, wholesale/retail service hand-offs)
- Experience using Jira and Confluence is desirable
