Network Specialist

Job description

The School ICT Infrastructure Refresh Program (SIIRP) is a multi-year program of works, consisting of a number of different initiatives that directly improve ICT infrastructure in schools and corporate regional offices.

This program aims to deliver:
  • More reliable network connectivity for schools
  • Reduced security risks on school network infrastructure
  • Improved user experience when accessing and utilising internet-based services
  • Improved maintainability of network and telephony infrastructure
The Network Designer will be responsible for the following activities:
  • Produce complex active and passive design specifications, topologies and detailed design documentation of networks and infrastructure by applying industry standard techniques to design fit-for-purpose solutions and contribute to project delivery within the department.
  • Provide appropriate information on incident reviews and statistical reports within the environment which can be consumed by team leaders, management, and other departmental staff.
  • Contribute to the preparation of written and verbal advice, including briefing papers and technical artefacts for the consideration of management and clients in relation to information technology services.
  • Maintain a high level of quality in the performance of all duties, ensuring adherence to quality assurance expectations, policies and procedures, government and industry standards and best practices, proactively seeking improvements in the way in which work is undertaken.
Required experience:
  • Develop network plans, encompassing the communication of data, voice, text and image, in the support of project objectives and the planning of all aspects of infrastructure necessary to ensure provision of network services to meet business requirements. Physical implementation may include copper wire, fibre-optic, wireless, or any other technology.
  • Develop network designs and documentation, focused primarily on telephony and data infrastructure, to support business requirements for connectivity, capacity, interfacing, security, resilience, recovery and access.
  • Identify and investigate issues and incidents using an analytical problem-solving approach to maintain and support a large and complex ICT environment.
  • Act as an integral part of the departmental ICT operations teams, providing leadership, mentoring, and technical expertise to peers within operational teams, school representatives and other departmental staff, in relation to service delivery, technical processes and new technology development. 
  • Coordinate with operational teams and contribute to the successful installation and decommission of IT hardware, systems and networks.
