About the role

The Head of Financial Reporting & Control is a senior leadership role within Brighter Super, reporting directly to the CFO and responsible for maintaining the fund’s financial integrity. The position oversees the full financial control environment, ensuring high-quality statutory and regulatory reporting, compliance with APRA requirements, and effective internal processes. It plays a critical role in delivering accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting to the CFO, Audit Committees, and the Board.

In addition to managing core finance deliverables, the role has a strong strategic focus—leading transformation initiatives, enhancing reporting capabilities, and ensuring the organisation is well-prepared for future mergers or structural changes. It works in close partnership with the Heads of Financial Planning & Analysis, Investment Operations, and Tax to align financial systems, processes, and controls with Brighter Super’s broader business objectives.

This position leads teams across financial control, accounts payable, and regulatory reporting, fostering a culture of accountability, efficiency, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will combine technical expertise with strong leadership, strategic insight, and the ability to collaborate effectively across senior leadership and wider business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing financial reporting and control team.
  • Lead all statutory financial reporting and APRA/regulatory reporting, ensuring compliance with standards and deadlines.
  • Oversee the financial control framework, maintaining robust internal controls and accounting policy adherence.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, driving accuracy and efficiency improvements.
  • Direct accounting operations including general ledger, reconciliations, procurement, payments, and custodial services.
  • Coordinate successor fund transfer (SFT) accounting in line with acquisition activity.
  • Drive process transformation, automation, and reduced month-end close timelines.
  • Provide accounting advice and strategic direction to meet compliance and reporting excellence goals.
  • Liaise with external auditors to ensure smooth audits and timely resolution of issues.
  • Promote an ethical, collaborative, and member-focused culture aligned with Brighter Super’s values.
The Person

For the Head of Financial Reporting & Control role, Brighter Super requires a highly qualified finance leader with a strong technical foundation. The ideal candidate will hold tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, be a CA or CPA, and bring significant financial reporting experience in complex, regulated environments. Deep technical accounting expertise is essential, particularly in IFRS, APRA reporting, and AASB 1056 Superannuation Entities, alongside proficiency in ERP systems such as TechnologyOne. Sector experience in superannuation, banking, or large regulated institutions will be highly regarded.

This is a pivotal senior leadership role suited to a dynamic leader with a strong track record of guiding teams through periods of growth, transformation, or significant organisational change. The ideal candidate will inspire, coach, and empower their team to deliver on strategic objectives while upholding the highest standards of accuracy, compliance, and timeliness. They will bring sound judgement, discretion, and the ability to navigate competing priorities with confidence, as well as proven experience building constructive relationships with external auditors and regulatory bodies.

Cultural fit is equally critical. Brighter Super seeks a leader with high emotional intelligence, a low-ego, team-first mentality, and the ability to collaborate seamlessly across departments such as investment operations, risk, and strategy. The successful candidate will be constructively challenging, willing to question the status quo, and capable of leading process improvements and transformation initiatives with diplomacy and confidence. Building trust, fostering relationships, and influencing stakeholders at all levels are core to the role’s success.

Beyond technical competence, the role calls for strategic thinking and a proactive mindset. The Head of Financial Reporting & Control will not only ensure compliance and operational excellence but also contribute to Brighter Super’s broader growth objectives, including merger readiness and continuous improvement in financial operations. This balance of technical depth, leadership strength, cultural alignment, and forward-thinking vision will be essential in shaping the finance function’s future and supporting Brighter Super’s mission.
