Chief Information Officer
Job description
About Mater
Mater is Queensland’s largest and most innovative not-for-profit healthcare provider, caring for almost 700,000 patients each year across a network of 11 hospitals, community health services, education and research facilities.
For more than a century, Mater has existed to respond to unmet community need, delivering compassionate, high-quality care guided by a strong Mission, Vision and Values. As the organisation continues to evolve, technology and digital capability are central to enabling clinical excellence, patient safety, workforce effectiveness and long-term sustainability.
Mater is now entering a critical phase of enterprise transformation, creating a rare opportunity for a senior technology leader to shape the organisation’s future digital landscape.
About the role:
This newly defined Chief Information Officer (CIO) role represents a pivotal leadership opportunity to reset, modernise and future-proof Mater’s Digital & Technology Infrastructure (DTI) environment.
Reporting directly to the Group Chief Executive Officer, the CIO will lead a comprehensive transformation of technology strategy, operating model, governance and culture. The role is accountable for ensuring technology becomes a stable, scalable and trusted enabler of patient care, clinical excellence and organisational performance.
This is not a steady-state CIO role. It is a hands-on, enterprise-wide transformation mandate requiring strong judgement, pragmatism and credibility. The CIO will balance fiscal discipline with ambition, stability with innovation, and operational reliability with future-focused capability. The role is central to enabling Mater’s growth agenda, hospital and ambulatory care expansion, data and analytics maturity, and readiness for future mergers, acquisitions or divestments.
The successful leader will inherit a complex and fragmented technology environment and will be empowered to bring clarity, structure and momentum, building strong foundations first, then progressively unlocking innovation aligned to Mater’s mission and values.
Specifically, key accountabilities include:

Key elements of the mandate include:
You are a proven technology transformation leader with the credibility, judgement and resilience to lead complex change in a purpose-driven, highly regulated environment. You bring deep experience operating at enterprise scale, ideally within healthcare or similarly complex service-led organisations and are comfortable balancing operational stability with long-term digital ambition.
You have a strong track record of resetting fragmented technology environments, establishing clear enterprise architecture, and building practical, executable roadmaps that deliver measurable outcomes. You are equally comfortable working hands-on in the early stages of transformation, diagnosing issues, clarifying accountabilities and stabilising delivery, before transitioning to a more strategic, future-focused leadership posture.
You are a confident and credible advisor at Executive and Board level, able to communicate complex technical matters with clarity and influence. Your leadership style is authentic, decisive and people-centred, with a demonstrated ability to uplift capability, strengthen accountability and bring teams on demanding journeys of change.
Importantly, you are values-aligned and deeply respectful of Mater’s mission, patient-centred ethos and not-for-profit context. You bring a disciplined, pragmatic approach to innovation, ensuring strong foundations are in place before pursuing advanced capability in areas such as data, analytics, AI and digital health.
This role will suit a CIO or senior technology executive who thrives in environments requiring clarity, courage and collaboration, and who is motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact at scale.
