A06 WHS and Rail Safety Advisor

A key Queensland Government department is leading a transformation of the state’s passenger rail network through unprecedented infrastructure investment. We are seeking a committed and proactive Principal WHS & Rail Safety Advisor to support major rail infrastructure  projects under the new rail branch.
This is a hands-on, field-based role that offers the opportunity to provide visible safety leadership, influence culture, and drive rail safety best practices across major construction activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead from the Field – Conduct regular site walks, inspections and safety verifications across project worksites.
  • Engage and Influence – Partner with contractors, Queensland Rail, and on-site teams to ensure safe systems of work are understood and implemented.
  • Investigate and Improve – Respond to incidents, review investigations, and implement corrective actions that make a difference.
  • Embed Risk Culture – Lead toolbox talks and risk assessments to promote strong safety behaviours.
  • Deliver Assurance – Support the department’s governance through audits, compliance checks, and system reviews.
  • Report with Purpose – Translate real-time site insights into clear reports for senior leadership and continuous improvement.
 About You
You are a skilled safety professional who thrives in both site-based and governance-focused environments. You’re confident engaging directly with contractors and crews, and know how to turn safety policy into practical outcomes.
Essential:
  • Tertiary qualifications in WHS, Business, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of WHS legislation, Rail Safety National Law, and safety standards (AS/ISO).
  • Demonstrated experience with WHS systems and their practical application on infrastructure or rail projects.
  • Ability to build relationships and influence behaviour through on-site presence.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital safety reporting systems.
Desirable:
  • Experience liaising with ONRSR and OFSC.
  • Internal Auditor certification.
  • ICAM Lead Investigator accreditation.
